And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to the king: in Israel there were eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand.


But the king's word prevailed against Joab. So Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, and came back to Jerusalem.


David did not number those below twenty years of age, for the Lord had promised to make Israel as many as the stars of heaven.


Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but did not finish; yet wrath came upon Israel for this, and the number was not entered in the chronicles of King David.
