Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.


For learning about wisdom and instruction, for understanding words of insight,


Hear, my child, your father’s instruction, and do not reject your mother’s teaching,


A wise child loves discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.


Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom for the future.


The words of the wise: Incline your ear and hear my words and apply your mind to my teaching,


My child, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding,


Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call insight your intimate friend,


We have obeyed the charge of our ancestor Jonadab son of Rechab in all that he commanded us, to drink no wine all our days, ourselves, our wives, our sons, or our daughters,


Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
