What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him?’


Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:


Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, or is it gain to him if you make your ways blameless?


What are humans, that you make so much of them, that you set your mind on them,


I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”


If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it.


If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.


So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’ ”


nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things.


and to keep the commandments of the Lord and his decrees that I am commanding you today, for your own well-being.
