And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Jo´ab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.
And Jo´ab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.
And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aro´er, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:
Among the He´bronites was Jeri´jah the chief, even among the He´bronites, according to the generations of his fathers. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valor at Jazer of Gil´e-ad.
For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants thereof, they are come even unto Jazer, they wandered through the wilderness: her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the sea.
The cities of Aro´er are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for thee with the weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the sea, they reach even to the sea of Jazer: the spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage.
Appoint a way, that the sword may come to Rabbath of the Ammonites, and to Judah in Jerusalem the defensed.
but I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:

Gil´e-ad abode beyond Jordan: and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the seashore, and abode in his breaches.
