12 For we are not commending ourselves to you again, but we are giving you an opportunity to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearances and not about matters of the heart.

just as you have understood us in part—that on the day of the Lord Jesus you will be proud of us just as we will be proud of you.


For we do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves with one another and compare themselves to one another, they do not show good sense.


For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.


Are you looking only at outward appearances? If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, he should remind himself that just as he belongs to Christ, so we also belong to Christ.


For even if I boast somewhat further about our authority (which the Lord has given us for building you up and not for tearing you down), I will not be ashamed.


I have become a fool by boasting; you compelled me to do it. I ought to have been commended by you, for in no way have I been inferior to these “super-apostles,” even though I am nothing.


Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you or letters of recommendation from you?


Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses,


so that your boasting may abound in Christ Jesus because of me when I come to you again.
