Numbers 21:4 - New International Reader's Version

4 The Israelites traveled from Mount Hor along the way to the Red Sea. They wanted to go around Edom. But they grew tired on the way.

“What road should we take to attack Moab?” Joram asked. “The one that goes through the Desert of Edom,” Jehoshaphat answered.


Moses reported these things to the Israelites. But they didn’t listen to him. That’s because they had lost all hope and had to work very hard.


The Amalekites and the Canaanites are living in the valleys. So turn back tomorrow. Start out toward the desert. Go along the way that leads to the Red Sea.”


Moses did just as the Lord had commanded. The three men went up Mount Hor while the whole community was watching.


The Lord has given the land of Canaan to the Israelites. So why would you want to keep them from going over into it?


They went up to the Valley of Eshkol and looked at the land. Then they talked the Israelites out of entering the land the Lord had given them.


They left Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah.


There they helped the believers gain strength. They told them to remain faithful to what they had been taught. “We must go through many hard times to enter God’s kingdom,” they said.


As for you, turn around. Start out toward the desert. Go along the road that leads to the Red Sea.”


We turned back and started out toward the desert. We went along the road that leads to the Red Sea. That’s how the Lord had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir.


“Next, they traveled through the desert. They traveled along the borders of the lands of Edom and Moab. They passed along the east side of the country of Moab. They camped on the other side of the Arnon River. They didn’t enter the territory of Moab. The Arnon River was Moab’s border.
