I had been like a gentle lamb led off to be killed. I didn’t realize they had made plans against me. They had said, “Let’s destroy the tree and its fruit. Let’s take away his life. Then his name won’t be remembered anymore.”


But what if you do not obey me? Suppose you do not keep the Sabbath day holy. And suppose you carry a load through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. Then I will start a fire that can’t be put out. It will begin at the gates of Jerusalem. It will destroy its mighty towers.” ’ ”


Peter was sitting out in the courtyard. A female servant came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.


The governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the palace, which was called the Praetorium. All the rest of the soldiers gathered around him.


Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards. He warmed himself at the fire.


Peter was below in the courtyard. One of the high priest’s female servants came by.


The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace. It was called the Praetorium. They called together the whole company of soldiers.


Some people there started a fire in the middle of the courtyard. Then they sat down together. Peter sat down with them.


Annas and Caiaphas were high priests. At that time God’s word came to John, son of Zechariah, in the desert.


But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders. They had commanded anyone who found out where Jesus was staying to report it. Then they could arrest him.


Annas sent him, tied up, to Caiaphas, the high priest.


Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning. The Jewish leaders did not want to be made “unclean.” They wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal. So they did not enter the palace.
