They arose out of Midyan, and came to Paran; and they took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, to Par`oh king of Egypt, who gave him a house, and appointed him food, and gave him land.


Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed. Trembling takes hold of the mighty men of Mo'av. All the inhabitants of Kena`an are melted away.


On all the housetops of Mo'av and in the streets of it there is lamentation every where; for I have broken Mo'av like a vessel in which none delights, says the LORD.


Balak the son of Tzippor saw all that Yisra'el had done to the Amori.


The elders of Mo'av and the elders of Midyan departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came to Bil`am, and spoke to him the words of Balak.


I see him, but not now. I see him, but not near. A star will come out of Ya`akov. A scepter will rise out of Yisra'el, and shall strike through the corners of Mo'av, and break down all the sons of Sheth.


Behold, one of the children of Yisra'el came and brought to his brothers a Midyanite woman in the sight of Moshe, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Yisra'el, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.


The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying,


They killed the kings of Midyan with the rest of their slain: Evi, and Rekem, and Tzur, and Chur, and Reva, the five kings of Midyan: Bil`am also the son of Be'or they killed with the sword.


Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Tzippor, king of Mo'av? did he ever strive against Yisra'el, or did he ever fight against them?


The children of Yisra'el did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midyan seven years.
