“And I am weak today, though anointed sovereign. And these men, the sons of Tseruyah, are too harsh for me. Let יהוה repay the evil-doer according to his evil.”
In his days Ḥi’ĕl of Bĕyth Ěl built Yeriḥo. He laid its foundation at the cost of Aḇiram his first-born, and at the cost of his youngest son Seḡuḇ he set up its gates, according to the word of יהוה, which He had spoken through Yehoshua son of Nun.
“Thus יהוה shall return his blood on his head, because he had fallen on two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, while my father Dawiḏ did not know it: Aḇnĕr son of Nĕr, commander of the army of Yisra’ĕl, and Amasa son of Yether, commander of the army of Yehuḏah.
I give thanks to יהוה according to His righteousness, And praise the Name of יהוה Most High.
And brings back on them their own wickedness, And cuts them off in their own wrongdoing; יהוה our Elohim does cut them off.
The wrong one is entrapped In his own crookednesses, And he is caught in the cords of his sin.
“Woe to the wrong – evil! For the reward of his hand is done to him.
And Yehoshua warned them at that time, saying, “Cursed is the man before יהוה who rises up and builds this city Yeriḥo – he lays its foundation with his first-born, and with his youngest he sets up its gates.”
And Aḏoni-Ḇezeq said, “Seventy sovereigns with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather food under my table. As I have done, so Elohim has repaid me.” And they brought him to Yerushalayim, and he died there.
And after Aḇimeleḵ there arose Tola son of Pu’ah, son of Doḏo, a man of Yissasḵar, to save Yisra’ĕl. And he dwelt in Shamur in the mountains of Ephrayim.
“But if not, let fire come out from Aḇimeleḵ and devour the masters of Sheḵem and Bĕyth Millo, and let fire come out from the masters of Sheḵem and from Bĕyth Millo and devour Aḇimeleḵ!”
in order that the violence done to the seventy sons of Yerubba‛al might come, and their blood be laid on Aḇimeleḵ their brother, who killed them, and on the masters of Sheḵem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.
And Aḇimeleḵ fought against the city all that day, and captured the city and killed the people who were in it. And he broke down the city and sowed it with salt.
Thus did Elohim repay the evil of Aḇimeleḵ, which he had done to his father to kill his seventy brothers.
