Then Hilkiah said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord”; and Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.


And the king went up to the house of the Lord, with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites, all the people both great and small; and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of the Lord.


Now after this, in the reign of Ar-ta-xerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah,


For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach his statutes and ordinances in Israel.


This is a copy of the letter which King Ar-ta-xerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, learned in matters of the commandments of the Lord and his statutes for Israel:


this Ezra went up from Babylonia. He was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses which the Lord the God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all that he asked, for the hand of the Lord his God was upon him.


These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and of Ezra the priest the scribe.


At the Fountain Gate they went up straight before them by the stairs of the city of David, at the ascent of the wall, above the house of David, to the Water Gate on the east.


and the temple servants living on Ophel repaired to a point opposite the Water Gate on the east and the projecting tower.


So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at the Water Gate and in the square at the Gate of Ephraim.


And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.


To the teaching and to the testimony! Surely for this word which they speak there is no dawn.


And they brought what Moses commanded before the tent of meeting; and all the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord.


“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and ordinances that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.


And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”


“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in.


“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat;


Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,


when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place which he will choose, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing.


Then all the people of Israel came out, from Dan to Beer-sheba, including the land of Gilead, and the congregation assembled as one man to the Lord at Mizpah.


And all the people arose as one man, saying, “We will not any of us go to his tent, and none of us will return to his house.
