Upon my bed by night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer.
I slept, but my heart was awake. Hark! my beloved is knocking. “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one; for my head is wet with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.”
I had put off my garment, how could I put it on? I had bathed my feet, how could I soil them?
For still the vision awaits its time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seem slow, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay.
But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’
Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’
And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?
And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple.
But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
And he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country for a long while.
Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed;
Therefore it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.”
Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour.
