They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; for grain and wine they gash themselves, they rebel against me.


Thou who art of purer eyes than to behold evil and canst not look on wrong, why dost thou look on faithless men, and art silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he?


‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;


And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;


They profess to know God, but they deny him by their deeds; they are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good deed.
