and say, ‘Thus says the king: Put this fellow in prison, and feed him on reduced rations of bread and water until I come in peace.’ ”


For my sighing comes like my bread, and my groanings are poured out like water.


so that their lives loathe bread, and their appetites dainty food.


Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt, or is there any flavor in the juice of mallows?


“O that I might have my request, and that God would grant my desire;

I had eaten no rich food, no meat or wine had entered my mouth, and I had not anointed myself at all, for the full three weeks.
