The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,


And when one comes to see me, he utters empty words, while his heart gathers iniquity; when he goes out, he tells it abroad.


They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed down. They dug a pit in my way, but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah


For behold, they lie in wait for my life; fierce men stir up strife against me. For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,


who by a word make a man out to be an offender, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right.


Then they said, “Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words.”


For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.”


But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him.


I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.


Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
