After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem,


Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.


The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem  were going out to him, and they were baptised by him in the River Jordan,  confessing  their sins.


‘The   Law and the Prophets   were until John; since then, the good news of the kingdom of God   has been proclaimed, and everyone is urgently invited to enter it.


He went into all the vicinity of the Jordan,  proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,


He then said to the crowds who came out to be baptised by him, ‘Brood of vipers!  Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?


John  also was baptising in Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water there. People were coming and being baptised,


John   , was a burning and shining lamp,   and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
