Some time after this, Joseph was told, ‘Your father is weaker.’ So he set out with his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.


Then he left them, went out of the city to Bethany,  and spent the night there.


When  they approached Jerusalem,  at Bethphage and Bethany  near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples


He said this, and then he told them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,   but I’m on my way to wake him up.’


Bethany was near Jerusalem  (less than three kilometres  away).


Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.


So the sisters sent a message to him: ‘Lord, the one you love is ill.’


Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb  and raised him from the dead, continued to testify.


Then a large crowd of the Jews learned he was there. They came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, the one he had raised from the dead.


About that time she became ill and died. After washing her, they placed her in a room upstairs.
