Next, the king stood by the pillar  , and made a covenant  in the Lord’s presence to follow the Lord and to keep his commands, his decrees, and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul  in order to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book; all the people agreed to  the covenant.

Both were righteous in God’s sight,  living blamelessly  according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord.

But anyone joined  to the Lord is one spirit  with him.


You are to fear the Lord your God and worship him. Remain faithful  to him and take oaths in his name.


‘Therefore, love the Lord your God and always keep his mandate and his statutes, ordinances, and commands.

so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work  and growing in the knowledge of God,


This is love:  that we walk according to his commands.  This is the command as you have heard it from the beginning: that you walk in love.


Samuel told them, ‘If you  are returning to the Lord   with all your heart,  get rid of the foreign gods  and the Ashtoreths that are among you, set your hearts on the Lord, and worship only him.  Then he will rescue you from the Philistines.’
