After this,  David defeated the Philistines, subdued them, and took Gath and its surrounding villages from Philistine control.


Asa had an army of three hundred thousand from Judah bearing large shields and spears,  and two hundred and eighty thousand from Benjamin bearing shields and drawing the bow. All these were valiant warriors.


Then Zerah the Cushite came against them with an army of one million men and three hundred  chariots. They came as far as Mareshah.


Then Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, ‘Because you formed an alliance with Ahaziah, the Lord has broken up what you have made.’ So the ships were wrecked and were not able to go to Tarshish.


Uzziah went out to wage war against the Philistines,  and he tore down the wall of Gath, the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod. Then he built cities in the vicinity of Ashdod and among the Philistines.

Some Ziphites  came up to Saul at Gibeah and said, ‘Isn’t it true that David is hiding among us in the strongholds in Horesh on the hill of Hachilah south of Jeshimon?
