Genesis 35:1 - Tree of Life Version

1 Then God said to Jacob, “Get up! Go up to Beth-El and stay there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”

I am the God of Beth-El where you anointed a memorial stone, where you made a vow to Me. Get up now and leave this land, and return to the land of your relatives.’”


In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel, and in his vigor he strove with God.


When he calls on Me, I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble, rescue him, and honor him.


For Adonai will judge His people— for His servants, He will relent when He sees that strength is gone and no one is left, slave or free.


He built an altar there and called the place El-Beth-El because God had revealed Himself to him there when he fled from the presence of his brother.


Then Adonai said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”


He subdues peoples under us, and nations under our feet.


When Pharaoh heard about this, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, where he sat down by a well.


Abraham named that place, Adonai Yireh,—as it is said today, “On the mountain, Adonai will provide.”


He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s slave-girl, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”


From there he moved to the mountain to the east of Beth-El and erected his tent (with Beth-El to the west and Ai to the east). There he built an altar to Adonai and called on the Name of Adonai.

But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”


Then you will go on from there until you reach the terebinth of Tabor, and there three men going up to God at Beth-el will meet you, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and the other carrying a jug of wine.


Then Jacob lifted up his feet and went to the land of the peoples of the east.


Jacob named the place where God spoke with him Beth-El.
