10 Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.


Go, eat your bread with enjoyment, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already approved what you do.


Let Israel be glad in his Maker, let the sons of Zion rejoice in their King!


I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.


Therefore the Jews of the villages, who live in the open towns, hold the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day for gladness and feasting and holiday-making, and a day on which they send choice portions to one another.


for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of liberality on their part.


as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending choice portions to one another and gifts to the poor.


also that it is God's gift to man that every one should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil.


There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God;


Give a portion to seven, or even to eight, for you know not what evil may happen on earth.


Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If any other man thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more:


But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you.


I come to my garden, my sister, my bride, I gather my myrrh with my spice, I eat my honeycomb with my honey, I drink my wine with my milk. Eat, O friends, and drink: drink deeply, O lovers!


Behold, what I have seen to be good and to be fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life which God has given him, for this is his lot.


“Be glad, O sons of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord, your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the latter rain, as before.


and those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth.


Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes; for we come on a feast day. Pray, give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’ ”


So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.”


And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.


and every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be sacred to the Lord of hosts, so that all who sacrifice may come and take of them and boil the flesh of the sacrifice in them. And there shall no longer be a trader in the house of the Lord of hosts on that day.


On the eighth day he sent the people away; and they blessed the king, and went to their homes joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the Lord had shown to David his servant and to Israel his people.


Honor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place.


For thou art the glory of their strength; by thy favor our horn is exalted.


And now the Lord says, who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God has become my strength—
