By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he received approval as righteous, God bearing witness by accepting his gifts; he died, but through his faith he is still speaking.


For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, a cry!


From oppression and violence he redeems their life; and precious is their blood in his sight.


Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.


For he who avenges blood is mindful of them; he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.


You shall not thus pollute the land in which you live; for blood pollutes the land, and no expiation can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of him who shed it.


“O earth, cover not my blood, and let my cry find no resting place.


For your lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning; of every beast I will require it and of man; of every man's brother I will require the life of man.


These things you have done and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you, and lay the charge before you.


Then the Lord said, “I have seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters; I know their sufferings,


From out of the city the dying groan, and the soul of the wounded cries for help; yet God pays no attention to their prayer.


‘As surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons—says the Lord—I will requite you on this plot of ground.’ Now therefore take him up and cast him on the plot of ground, in accordance with the word of the Lord.”


Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and render praise to him; and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”

Be gracious to me, O Lord! Behold what I suffer from those who hate me, O thou who liftest me up from the gates of death,
