1 Now Jacob heard that the sons of Laban were saying, “Jacob has taken all that was our father's; and from what was our father's he has gained all this wealth.”

Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.


for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,


For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by men and hating one another;


he is puffed up with conceit, he knows nothing; he has a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions,


Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them;


Behold, every one who uses proverbs will use this proverb about you, ‘Like mother, like daughter.’


Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches;


Therefore Sheol has enlarged its appetite and opened its mouth beyond measure, and the nobility of Jerusalem and her multitude go down, her throng and he who exults in her.


Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming; but who can stand before jealousy?


A tranquil mind gives life to the flesh, but passion makes the bones rot.


I lie in the midst of lions that greedily devour the sons of men; their teeth are spears and arrows, their tongues sharp swords.


from men by thy hand, O Lord, from men whose portion in life is of the world. May their belly be filled with what thou hast stored up for them; may their children have more than enough; may they leave something over to their babes.


if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who is there that has not been filled with his meat?’


And Haman recounted to them the splendor of his riches, the number of his sons, all the promotions with which the king had honored him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and the servants of the king.

Thus the man grew exceedingly rich, and had large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and asses.


And Jacob saw that Laban did not regard him with favor as before.


Then Laban answered and said to Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters, the children are my children, the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their children whom they have borne?
