I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping.


Put no trust in a friend, have no confidence in a loved one; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your embrace;


They heard how I was groaning, with no one to comfort me. All my enemies heard of my trouble; they are glad that you have done it. Bring on the day you have announced, and let them be as I am.


I called to my lovers but they deceived me; my priests and elders perished in the city while seeking food to revive their strength.


Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she took no thought of her future; her downfall was appalling, with none to comfort her. “O Lord, look at my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed!”


All your lovers have forgotten you; they care nothing for you; for I have dealt you the blow of an enemy, the punishment of a merciless foe, because your guilt is great, because your sins are so numerous.


But if you will not listen, my soul will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears, because the Lord's flock has been taken captive.


O that my head were a spring of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears, so that I might weep day and night for the slain of my poor people!


And you, O desolate one, what do you mean that you dress in crimson, that you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, that you enlarge your eyes with paint? In vain you beautify yourself. Your lovers despise you; they seek your life.


I am the scorn of all my adversaries, a horror to my neighbors, an object of dread to my acquaintances; those who see me in the street flee from me.


And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the whore; they will make her desolate and naked; they will devour her flesh and burn her up with fire.


These are united in yielding their power and authority to the beast;


She shall pursue her lovers, but not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them. Then she shall say, “I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better with me then than now.”


therefore, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and all those you hated; I will gather them against you from all around, and will uncover your nakedness to them, so that they may see all your nakedness.


My eyes are spent with weeping; my stomach churns; my bile is poured out on the ground because of the destruction of my people, because infants and babes faint in the streets of the city.


If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man's wife, will he return to her? Would not such a land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? says the Lord.


If the poor are hated even by their kin, how much more are they shunned by their friends! When they call after them, they are not there.


so I am allotted months of emptiness, and nights of misery are apportioned to me.


My companions are treacherous like a torrent-bed, like freshets that pass away,


May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy.


Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, “It is hopeless, for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.”


They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
