Therefore in my anger I swore, “They shall not enter my rest.”


So they set out from the mount of the Lord three days' journey with the ark of the covenant of the Lord going before them three days' journey, to seek out a resting place for them,


“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.


who goes before you on the way to seek out a place for you to camp, in fire by night, and in the cloud by day, to show you the route you should take.”


Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord: I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.


Then he led out his people like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.


for you have not yet come into the rest and the possession that the Lord your God is giving you.


and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good.


Surely the Lord your God has blessed you in all your undertakings; he knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.”


The Lord your God, who goes before you, is the one who will fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your very eyes,


Then the Lord said, “I do forgive, just as you have asked;


He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”


Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every boy that is born to the Hebrews you shall throw into the Nile, but you shall let every girl live.”


“When you act as midwives to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, she shall live.”


The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children.


They said to them, “The Lord look upon you and judge! You have brought us into bad odor with Pharaoh and his officials, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”


After a long time the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned under their slavery, and cried out. Out of the slavery their cry for help rose up to God.


“Remember the word that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘The Lord your God is providing you a place of rest, and will give you this land.’


I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them.


and I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face.
