But David said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should today become an adversary to me? Shall anyone be put to death in Israel this day? For do I not know that I am this day king over Israel?”


But who indeed are you, a human being, to argue with God? Will what is molded say to the one who molds it, “Why have you made me like this?”


Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?”


When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly.

Today I am powerless, even though anointed king; these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too violent for me. The Lord pay back the one who does wickedly in accordance with his wickedness!”


Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today.


For the word of the king is powerful, and who can say to him, “What are you doing?”


He snatches away; who can stop him? Who will say to him, ‘What are you doing?’


Moreover, is it without the Lord that I have come up against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.”


“Moreover you know also what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me, how he dealt with the two commanders of the armies of Israel, Abner son of Ner, and Amasa son of Jether, whom he murdered, retaliating in time of peace for blood that had been shed in war, and putting the blood of war on the belt around his waist, and on the sandals on his feet.


Suddenly they shouted, “What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”


She then said to Elijah, “What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to cause the death of my son!”


I am silent; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it.


Now therefore let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is the Lord who has stirred you up against me, may he accept an offering; but if it is mortals, may they be cursed before the Lord, for they have driven me out today from my share in the heritage of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’


The king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king gave him his oath.


Who can command and have it done, if the Lord has not ordained it?
