So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not of the people of Israel but of the remnant of the Amorites; although the people of Israel had sworn to spare them, Saul had tried to wipe them out in his zeal for the people of Israel and Judah.)


You shall make no covenant with them and their gods.


When King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,


“Come up and help me, and let us attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the Israelites.”


There was not a town that made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon; all were taken in battle.


But when three days had passed after they had made a treaty with them, they heard that they were their neighbors and were living among them.
