But the priests were too few and could not skin all the burnt offerings, so, until other priests had sanctified themselves, their kindred, the Levites, helped them until the work was finished, for the Levites were more conscientious than the priests in sanctifying themselves.


You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight.


They shall be ministers in my sanctuary, having oversight at the gates of the temple and serving in the temple; they shall slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people, and they shall attend on them and serve them.


and said to him, “Although we are unclean through touching a corpse, why must we be kept from presenting the Lord’s offering at its appointed time among the Israelites?”


Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.
