“Your father made our yoke heavy. Now, therefore, lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke that he placed on us, and we will serve you.”


Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand by the sea; they ate and drank and were happy.


During Solomon’s lifetime Judah and Israel lived in safety, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all of them under their vines and fig trees.


King Solomon conscripted forced labor out of all Israel; the levy numbered thirty thousand men.


Solomon also had seventy thousand laborers and eighty thousand stonecutters in the hill country,


But of the Israelites Solomon made no slaves; they were the soldiers; they were his officials, his commanders, his captains, and the commanders of his chariotry and cavalry.


They sent and called him, and Jeroboam and all Israel came and said to Rehoboam,


He said to them, “Come to me again in three days.” So the people went away.


After a long time the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned under their slavery and cried out. Their cry for help rose up to God from their slavery.


I was angry with my people; I profaned my heritage; I gave them into your hand; you showed them no mercy; on the aged you made your yoke exceedingly heavy.


They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others, but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them.


For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,
