He said to them, “Then give to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's.”


He said, “Yes, he does.” And when he came home, Jesus spoke of it first, asking, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their children or from others?”


My child, fear the Lord and the king, and do not disobey either of them;


Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching;


They answered, “The emperor's.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's.”


Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ;


Husbands, in the same way, show consideration for your wives in your life together, paying honor to the woman as the weaker sex, since they too are also heirs of the gracious gift of life—so that nothing may hinder your prayers.


Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be blasphemed.


Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband.


They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”


Jesus said to them, “Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's.” And they were utterly amazed at him.


So Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.


You shall rise before the aged, and defer to the old; and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.


You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.


Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.


Besides that, they learn to be idle, gadding about from house to house; and they are not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not say.


Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.


Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?”
