On that day they shall take up a taunt song against you, and wail with bitter lamentation, and say, “We are utterly ruined; the Lord alters the inheritance of my people; how he removes it from me! Among our captors he parcels out our fields.”


I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,


Job again took up his discourse and said:


Again he uttered his oracle, saying: “Alas, who shall live when God does this?


So he uttered his oracle, saying: “The oracle of Balaam son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is clear,


When they realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowd. So they left him and went away.


He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”


Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, an undeserved curse goes nowhere.


Job again took up his discourse and said:


Next to him among the three warriors was Eleazar son of Dodo son of Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle. The Israelites withdrew,


This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth to speak in parables; I will proclaim what has been hidden from the foundation of the world.”


Shall not everyone taunt such people and, with mocking riddles, say about them, “Alas for you who heap up what is not your own!” How long will you load yourselves with goods taken in pledge?


Then I said, “Ah Lord God! they are saying of me, ‘Is he not a maker of allegories?’ ”


O mortal, propound a riddle, and speak an allegory to the house of Israel.


When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of David's brother Shimei, killed him.


But David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.


Your servant has killed both lions and bears; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.”


And the Philistine said, “Today I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man, that we may fight together.”


Then he looked on the Kenite, and uttered his oracle, saying: “Enduring is your dwelling place, and your nest is set in the rock;


for I will surely do you great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do; come, curse this people for me.’ ”


‘A people has come out of Egypt and has spread over the face of the earth; now come, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to fight against them and drive them out.’ ”


and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to Paddan-aram.


Go at once to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father; and take as wife from there one of the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.


The descendants of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.


So he returned to Balak, who was standing beside his burnt offerings with all the officials of Moab.


Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of my persecutors surrounds me,
