Whoever says, “I am in the light,” while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness.


And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell.


to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show every courtesy to everyone.


Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.


So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

When they had brought them, they had them stand before the council. The high priest questioned them,

But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons.”


Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues;


But you should not have gloated over your brother on the day of his misfortune; you should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah on the day of their ruin; you should not have boasted on the day of distress.


Then Nebuchadnezzar was so filled with rage against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego that his face was distorted. He ordered the furnace heated up seven times more than was customary,


Then Nebuchadnezzar in furious rage commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought in; so they brought those men before the king.


Those who were my enemies without cause have hunted me like a bird;


Like the partridge hatching what it did not lay, so are all who amass wealth unjustly; in mid-life it will leave them, and at their end they will prove to be fools.


A fool's lips bring strife, and a fool's mouth invites a flogging.


The dullard cannot know, the stupid cannot understand this:


More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; many are those who would destroy me, my enemies who accuse me falsely. What I did not steal must I now restore?


When we look at the wise, they die; fool and dolt perish together and leave their wealth to others.


Do not let my treacherous enemies rejoice over me, or those who hate me without cause wink the eye.


Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.


Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is no one who does good.


and said to them, “As far as we were able, we have bought back our Jewish kindred who had been sold to other nations; but now you are selling your own kin, who must then be bought back by us!” They were silent, and could not find a word to say.


Then Asa was angry with the seer, and put him in the stocks, in prison, for he was in a rage with him because of this. And Asa inflicted cruelties on some of the people at the same time.


Ahab went home resentful and sullen because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had said to him; for he had said, “I will not give you my ancestral inheritance.” He lay down on his bed, turned away his face, and would not eat.

David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants' maids, as any vulgar fellow might shamelessly uncover himself!”


His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Are you indeed to have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more because of his dreams and his words.


You shall appoint judges and officials throughout your tribes, in all your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, and they shall render just decisions for the people.


He appointed judges in the land in all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city,


When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council.


So they ordered them to leave the council while they discussed the matter with one another.


When they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and went on with their teaching. When the high priest and those with him arrived, they called together the council and the whole body of the elders of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.


They stirred up the people as well as the elders and the scribes; then they suddenly confronted him, seized him, and brought him before the council.


And all who sat in the council looked intently at him, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.


Since he wanted to find out what Paul was being accused of by the Jews, the next day he released him and ordered the chief priests and the entire council to meet. He brought Paul down and had him stand before them.


While Paul was looking intently at the council he said, “Brothers, up to this day I have lived my life with a clear conscience before God.”


Or let these men here tell what crime they had found when I stood before the council,
