27 Joshua said to all the people, “See, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us; therefore it shall be a witness against you, if you deal falsely with your God.”

He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”


The Reubenites and the Gadites called the altar Witness; “For,” said they, “it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.”


but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.


“Take this book of the law and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God; let it remain there as a witness against you.


Hear, O heavens, and listen, O earth; for the Lord has spoken: I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.


or I shall be full, and deny you, and say, “Who is the Lord?” or I shall be poor, and steal, and profane the name of my God.


For I was in terror of calamity from God, and I could not have faced his majesty.


Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Jeshanah, and named it Ebenezer; for he said, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

They profess to know God, but they deny him by their actions. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.


Now therefore write this song, and teach it to the Israelites; put it in their mouths, in order that this song may be a witness for me against the Israelites.


I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live,


I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that you will soon utterly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to occupy; you will not live long on it, but will be utterly destroyed.


“I know your works. Look, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.


The very stones will cry out from the wall, and the plaster will respond from the woodwork.


but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you—because you have rejected the Lord who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’ ”


So Joshua sent the people away to their inheritances.


this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I should have been false to God above.


transgressing, and denying the Lord, and turning away from following our God, talking oppression and revolt, conceiving lying words and uttering them from the heart.
