The inhabitants of Samaria tremble for the calf of Beth-aven. Its people shall mourn for it, and its idolatrous priests shall wail over it, over its glory that has departed from it.


My people consult a piece of wood, and their divining rod gives them oracles. For a spirit of whoredom has led them astray, and they have played the whore, forsaking their God.


Instead, we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials, used to do in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. We used to have plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no misfortune.


Come now, you rich people, weep and wail for the miseries that are coming to you.


As it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil.


you who rejoice in Lo-debar, who say, “Have we not by our own strength taken Karnaim for ourselves?”


You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.


They have dealt faithlessly with the Lord; for they have borne illegitimate children. Now the new moon shall devour them along with their fields.


Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God. For the spirit of whoredom is within them, and they do not know the Lord.


I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees, of which she said, “These are my pay, which my lovers have given me.” I will make them a forest, and the wild animals shall devour them.


It is sharpened for slaughter, honed to flash like lightning! How can we make merry? You have despised the rod, and all discipline.


What is in your mind shall never happen—the thought, “Let us be like the nations, like the tribes of the countries, and worship wood and stone.”


Rejoice and be glad, O daughter Edom, you that live in the land of Uz; but to you also the cup shall pass; you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.


though you make them grow on the day that you plant them, and make them blossom in the morning that you sow; yet the harvest will flee away in a day of grief and incurable pain.


I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day.


Indeed, those who are far from you will perish; you put an end to those who are false to you.


bring a thank offering of leavened bread, and proclaim freewill offerings, publish them; for so you love to do, O people of Israel! says the Lord God.


Your wickedness will punish you, and your apostasies will convict you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the Lord your God; the fear of me is not in you, says the Lord God of hosts.


For long ago you broke your yoke and burst your bonds, and you said, “I will not serve!” On every high hill and under every green tree you sprawled and played the whore.


But you trusted in your beauty, and played the whore because of your fame, and lavished your whorings on any passer-by.


How sick is your heart, says the Lord God, that you did all these things, the deeds of a brazen whore;
