As for E´phra-im, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth, and from the womb, and from the conception.


Blow ye the cornet in Gib´e-ah, and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at Beth–a´ven, after thee, O Benjamin.


Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth–a´ven, nor swear, The Lord liveth.


And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Ba´al, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.


And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.


so that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.


I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Ba´al from this place, and the name of the Chem´arim with the priests;


and he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made.


And they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Ba´al.


Howbeit, from the sins of Jerobo´am the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Beth–el, and that were in Dan.


And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?


And Joshua sent men from Jericho to A´i, which is beside Beth–a´ven, on the east side of Beth–el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed A´i.


And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the Lord in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jerobo´am made you for gods.


They stoop, they bow down together; they could not deliver the burden, but themselves are gone into captivity.


Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as other people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved a reward upon every cornfloor.


That, in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, I will also visit the altars of Beth–el: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.
