And the men of Ai looked behind them, and saw; and, behold! The smoke of the city had gone up into the heaven. And there was no power in them to flee here or there. And the people who had fled to the wilderness turned back against the pursuers.


And the others came out from the city to meet them. And they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that. And they struck them until not a survivor was left to them, not one that escaped.


And it happened, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai, and had destroyed it (as he had done to Jericho and to its king, so he had done to Ai and to her king) and that the ones living in Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were in their midst,


And Joab saw that the face of the battle from the front was against him before and behind. And he chose from all the chosen in Israel, and set them in order to meet the Syrians.
