20 And the men of Ai looked behind them, and saw; and, behold! The smoke of the city had gone up into the heaven. And there was no power in them to flee here or there. And the people who had fled to the wilderness turned back against the pursuers.

And the kings of the earth will weep for her, and will wail over her, the ones having fornicated and having luxuriated with her, when they see the smoke of her burning;


It shall not be put out night or day; its smoke shall go up forever. From generation to generation, it shall lie waste; no one shall pass through it forever and forever.


The stouthearted have been plundered; they slept their sleep; and none of the men of might have found their hands.


But the eyes of the wicked ones shall be consumed, and escape shall perish from them; and their hope shall be like the breathing out of the soul.


And he looked toward the face of Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain. And he saw. And, behold, the smoke of the country went up like the smoke of a furnace.


And the ambush rose up quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered the city, and took it. And they hurried and burned the city with fire.


And Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city, and that the smoke of the city had gone up. And they turned back and struck the men of Ai.


And there was a sign set to the men of Israel with the ambush, to make it great, their causing a rising of smoke to go up from the city.


And the rising of smoke began to go up from the city, a pillar. And Benjamin turned around, and, behold, the whole city had gone up toward the heavens.


And the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were troubled. For they had seen that evil had struck them.
