These five women went to the Meeting Tent [320] and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and all the people of Israel.


Then Moses said to his father-in-law, “The people come to me and ask me to ask for God’s decision to their problem.


If anyone touches a dead body, then that person will be unclean for seven days. This is true if the dead body is out in the field or if the person was killed in war. Also, if anyone touches the bones from a dead person then that person is unclean.


If someone touches a dead person’s body, then he will be unclean [256] for seven days.


“I command the people of Israel to keep their camp free from sickness and disease. Tell the people to send away from the camp any person who has a bad skin disease. [78] Tell them to send away from the camp any person who has a discharge. [79] And tell them to send away from their camp any person who has touched a dead body.


Then the guards took Jesus from Caiaphas’ house to the \{Roman governor’s\} palace. It was early in the morning. The Jews there would not go inside the palace. They did not want to make themselves unclean, {\cf2\super [237]} because they wanted to eat the Passover {\cf2\super [238]} meal.


A clean person must take a hyssop [261] branch and dip it into the water. Then he must sprinkle it over the tent, the dishes, and the people who were in the tent. You must do this to anyone that touches a dead person’s body. You must do this to anyone that touches the body of someone killed in war and to anyone that touches a grave or the bones from a dead person.


These rulers were judges for the people. The people could always bring their arguments to these rulers. And Moses had to decide only the most important cases.


Now, listen to me. Let me give you some advice. And I pray God will be with you. You should continue listening to the problems of the people. And you should continue to speak to God about these things.


So Moses asked the Lord what he should do.


The people who saw him gathering the wood brought him to Moses and Aaron. And all the people gathered around.


The Israelite woman’s son began cursing and saying bad things about the Lord’s name. So the people brought this man to Moses. (The name of the man’s mother was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, from the family group of Dan.)


He must not make himself unclean [378] {by touching a dead body}. He must not go near a dead body, even if it is his own father or mother.


Those people said to Moses, “We touched a person’s dead body and became unclean. The priests stopped us from giving gifts to the Lord at the chosen time. So we can’t {celebrate Passover} with the other people of Israel! {What should we do?}”


“This is the rule about people who die in their tents. If a person dies in his tent, then everyone in the tent will be unclean. [258] They will be unclean for seven days.
