9 “Israel is like a lion, curled up and lying down. Yes, they are like a young lion, and no one wants to wake him! Any person who blesses you will be blessed. And any person who speaks against you will have great troubles.”

I will bless people who bless you, and I will curse people who curse [71] you. I will use you to bless all the people on earth.”


May all people serve you. May nations bow down to you. You will rule over your brothers. Your mother’s sons will bow down to you and obey you.


Judah is like a lion. My son, you are like a lion standing over the animal it killed. Judah is like a lion. He lies down to rest, and no one is brave enough to disturb him.


The people are as strong as a lion. They fight like a lion. And that lion will not rest, until he has eaten his enemy. And that lion will not rest, until he drinks the blood of the people who are against him.”


“Then the king will answer, ‘I tell you the truth. Anything you refused to do for any of my people here, {\cf2\super [390]} you refused to do for me.’


“Then the king will answer, ‘I tell you the truth. Anything you did for any of my people here, {\cf2\super [389]} you also did for me.’

Pray for peace in Jerusalem.\par “I hope the people who love you\par will find peace there.\par I hope there will be peace\par inside your walls.\par I hope there will be safety\par in your great buildings.”\par


Show that you are loyal to God’s son. {\cf2\super [6]} \par If you don’t do this,\par he will become angry and destroy you.\par


No person is brave enough\par to wake him up and make him angry.\par


You must obey everything he says. You must do everything that I tell you. If you do this, then I will be with you. I will be against all of your enemies. And I will be an enemy to every person who is against you.”


Come and help me. These people are too powerful for me. I know that you have great power. If you bless a person, then good things happen to him. And if you speak against a person, then bad things happen to him. So come and speak against these people. Maybe then I will be able to defeat them. Then I can force them to leave my country.”


But God said to Balaam, “Don’t go with them. You must not speak against those people. They are my people.”


Balak became very angry at Balaam. Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to come and speak against my enemies. But you have blessed them. You have blessed them three times.


The Lord told me: “When a lion or a lion’s cub catches an animal to eat, the lion stands over the dead animal and roars. At that time nothing can scare that great lion. If men come and yell at the lion, the lion will not be afraid. The men can make much noise, but the lion will not run away.”


But the survivors {\cf2\super [67]} from Jacob in the nations\par scattered among those people\par will be like a lion\par among the animals in the forest.\par They will be like a young lion\par among flocks of sheep.\par If the lion passes through,\par he goes where he wants to go.\par If he attacks an animal,\par then no one can save that animal.\par \{The survivors will be like that.\}\par


“Then the Lord your God will make all those bad things happen to your enemies. Why? Because those people hate you and give you trouble.


There were also two lions on each of the six steps. There was one lion at each end. There was nothing like this in any other kingdom.


The throne had six steps on it. And it had a footstool {\cf2\super [157]} that was made of gold. There were armrests on both sides of the throne’s seat. A statue of a lion stood next to each armrest.


Then Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Haman’s wife and the men that gave him advice said, “If Mordecai is a Jew, then you can’t win. You have already started to fall. Surely you will be ruined!”
