But soon enough, all of those people will laugh at him. They will tell stories about his defeat. They will laugh and say, ‘It’s too bad that the man who took so many things will not get to keep them! He made himself rich collecting debts.’


You people living in Mareshah, {\cf2\super [26]} \par I will bring a person against you.\par That person will take the things you own.\par The Glory of Israel (God)\par will come into Adullam. {\cf2\super [27]} \par


I (Jeremiah) will cry loud for the mountains.\par I will sing a funeral song\par for the empty fields.\par Why? Because the living things\par were taken away.\par No person travels there now.\par The sounds of cattle can’t be heard there.\par The birds have flown away\par and the animals are gone.\par


All the people will be forced out of the land. The wealth will all be taken. This will happen because the Lord commanded it.


Then I asked, “Master, how long should I do this?”


In daylight, you will have to feel your way like a blind man. You will fail in everything you do. Again and again people will hurt you and steal things from you. And there will not be anyone to save you.


Then Balaam said these things:


These Jewish leaders heard this story that Jesus told. They knew that this story was about them. So they wanted to find a way to arrest Jesus. But they were afraid of the people. So the Jewish leaders left Jesus and went away.


The Lord says, “I will destroy everything on earth! {\cf2\super [1]}


Get up and leave!\par This will not be your place of rest.\par Why? Because you ruined this place!\par You made it unclean,\par So it will be destroyed!\par It will be a terrible destruction!\par


People will be crying in the fields of grapes.\par Why? Because I will pass through\par \{and punish\} you.”\par The Lord said those things.\par


People of Israel, listen to this song. This funeral song is about you.


Priests, put on your clothes of sadness\par and cry loudly.\par Servants of the altar, {\cf2\super [5]} cry loudly.\par Servants of my God, you will sleep\par in your clothes of sadness.\par Why? Because there will be no more\par grain and drink offerings\par in God’s temple. {\cf2\super [6]} \par


Cry like the young woman\par that was ready to be married,\par and her husband-to-be was killed.\par


“All the people that talk about you will now have one more thing to say. They will say, ‘Like mother, like daughter.’


If I go into the country,\par I see the people that were killed\par with swords.\par If I go into the city,\par I see much sickness,\par because the people have no food.\par The priests and the prophets\par have been taken away to a foreign land.’”\par


Look! The enemy rises up like a cloud.\par His chariots {\cf2\super [25]} look like a wind storm.\par His horses are faster than eagles.\par It will be very bad for us!\par We are ruined!\par


At that time, you will begin to sing this song about the king of Babylon:


Then Job continued telling his story. Job said,\par


Jeremiah wrote and sang some funeral songs for Josiah. And the men and women singers still sing those sad songs today. It became something the people of Israel always do—they sing a sad song for Josiah. Those songs are written in the book, Funeral Songs.


David sang a sad song about Saul and his son Jonathan.


Then Balaam said these things:

Their houses will be given to other people.\par Their fields and their wives\par will be given to other people.\par I will raise my hand and punish\par the people of Judah.”\par This message was from the Lord.\par


So I will give their wives to other men.\par I will give their fields to new owners.\par All the people of Israel want\par more and more money.\par All the people,\par from the least important\par to most important people,\par are like that.\par All the people,\par from prophets to priests,\par tell lies.\par


I will be very sad about what will happen.\par I will go without shoes and clothes.\par I will cry like a dog. {\cf2\super [11]} \par I will mourn like a bird. {\cf2\super [12]} \par


I will scatter the people of Judah\par through other nations.\par They will live in strange nations.\par They and their fathers never knew\par about those countries.\par I will send men with swords.\par Those men will kill the people of Judah.\par They will kill them until the people\par are finished.”\par
