Then Jesus said to the followers, “Do you understand this story? If you don’t, then how will you understand any story?


Jesus used many stories like these to teach them. He taught them all that they could understand.


When Jesus finished teaching with these stories, he left there.


I will tell you this story.\par I will tell you this old story.\par


These Jewish leaders heard this story that Jesus told. They knew that this story was about them. So they wanted to find a way to arrest Jesus. But they were afraid of the people. So the Jewish leaders left Jesus and went away.


I myself listened to the stories.\par And now, with my harp, I will sing\par and reveal that message to you.\par


“I have told you these things, using words that hide the meaning. But the time will come when I will not use words like that to tell you things. I will speak to you in plain words about the Father.


Peter said, “Lord, did you tell this story for us or for all people?”


Jesus said, “You have been chosen to know the secrets of the kingdom of God. But I use stories to speak to other people. I do this so that:


Jesus used stories to teach the people. Jesus said, “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around the field and dug a hole for a wine press. {\cf2\super [152]} Then the man built a tower. He leased the land to some farmers. Then he left for a trip.


So Jesus called them together and talked to them using some stories. Jesus said, “Satan will not force his own demons {\cf2\super [49]} out of people.


“The fig tree teaches us a lesson: When the fig tree’s branches become green and soft, and new leaves begin to grow, then you know that summer is near.


But soon enough, all of those people will laugh at him. They will tell stories about his defeat. They will laugh and say, ‘It’s too bad that the man who took so many things will not get to keep them! He made himself rich collecting debts.’


Then people will sing songs about you.\par People will sing this sad song:\par ‘We are ruined!\par The Lord took away our land.\par And gave it to other people.\par Yes, he took my land away from me.\par The Lord has divided our fields\par \{among our enemies\}.\par


“Son of man, {\cf2\super [132]} tell this story to the family of Israel. Ask them what it means.


Jesus used stories to say some other things to the people. Jesus said,


While the farmer was planting, some seed fell by the road. The birds came and ate all that seed.
