Jesus said to them, “Remember when I was with you before? I said that everything written about me must happen—everything written in the law of Moses, the books of the prophets, {\cf2\super [396]} and the Psalms.”


Joseph went to a town called Nazareth and lived there. And so the thing happened that God said through the prophets. {\cf2\super [32]} God said that \{the Christ\} would be called a Nazarene. {\cf2\super [33]}


Then King Solomon prayed a long prayer to the Lord. This is what he said:


God said that these things would happen. God said through the prophets {\cf2\super [55]} that his Christ {\cf2\super [56]} would suffer and die. I have told you how God made this happen.


You made a promise to your servant David, my father. And you have kept that promise. You made that promise with your own mouth. And with your great power you have made that promise come true today.


This happened so that the words Jesus said before would be true: “I have not lost any of the men you gave me.”


This is the same as what the prophet {\cf2\super [185]} said:


During the first year {\cf2\super [1]} that Cyrus was king of Persia, the Lord encouraged Cyrus to make an announcement. Cyrus put that announcement in writing and had it read every place in his kingdom. This happened so that the Lord’s message that was spoken through Jeremiah {\cf2\super [2]} would truly happen. This is the announcement:


While I was with them, I kept them safe. I kept them safe by the power of your name—the name you gave me. I protected them. And only one of them was lost—the man (Judas) that chose to be lost. He was lost so that what was said in the Scriptures {\cf2\super [225]} would happen.


But this happened so that what is written in their law would be true: ‘They hated me for no reason.’ {\cf2\super [219]}


This Scripture {\cf2\super [171]} called those people gods—the people that received God’s message. And Scripture is always true.


But that person does not let the teaching go deep into his life. He keeps that teaching only a short time. When trouble or persecution {\cf2\super [183]} comes because of the teaching he accepted, then he quickly quits.


Jesus did these things to make happen what Isaiah the prophet {\cf2\super [165]} said. Isaiah said,


Joseph stayed in Egypt until Herod {\cf2\super [26]} died. This happened to make clear the full meaning of what the Lord said through the prophet. {\cf2\super [27]} The Lord said, “I called my son to come out of Egypt.” {\cf2\super [28]}


Jesus did these things to make happen what Isaiah the prophet {\cf2\super [95]} said:


“Don’t think that I have come to destroy the law \{of Moses\} or the \{teaching of the\} prophets. {\cf2\super [61]} I have not come to destroy their teachings. I came to give full meaning to their teachings.


The prophets {\cf2\super [334]} wrote many things about the time when God will punish his people. The time I am telling you about is the time when all these things must happen.


God made the ten horns want to do his purpose: They agreed to give the animal their power to rule. They will rule until the things God has said are completed.


God promised long ago to give this Good News to his people. God used his prophets {\cf2\super [3]} to promise this. That promise is written in the Holy Scriptures. {\cf2\super [4]}
