7 The man had a servant that took care of his garden. So the man said to his servant, ‘I have been looking for fruit on this tree for three years, but I never find any. Cut it down! Why should it waste the ground?’

Every tree that does not make good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.


The ax is now ready to cut down the trees. {\cf2\super [50]} Every tree that does not make good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”


If a person does not continue in me, then he is like a branch that is thrown away. That branch dies. People pick up dead branches, throw them into the fire, and burn them.


He cuts off every branch {\cf2\super [217]} of mine that does not make fruit. {\cf2\super [218]} And he trims and cleans every branch that makes fruit, so that it will make even more fruit.


So now let me destroy them in anger. Then I will make a great nation from you.”


He spoke very loud. He said, ‘Cut down the tree, and cut off its branches. Strip off its leaves. Scatter its fruit around. The animals that are under the tree will run away. The birds that were in its branches will fly away.


“In the future, you will enter your country. At that time, you will plant many kinds of trees for food. After planting a tree, you must wait three years before you can use any of the fruit from that tree. You must not use that fruit.


{Don’t worry!} I will order my blessing to come to you during the sixth year. The land will continue growing crops for three years.


But the servant answered, ‘Master, let the tree have one more year to make fruit. Let me dig up the dirt around it and put on some plant food.
