Moses writes about being made right by following the law. Moses says, “A person that wants to find life by following these things (the law) must do the things the law says.” {\cf2\super [99]}


Then I gave them my laws. I told them all my rules. If a person obeys those rules, then he will live.


The law does not use faith; \{it uses a different way.\} The law says, “A person who wants to find life by following these things (the law) must do the things the law says.” {\cf2\super [31]}


Jesus said to him, “Your answer is right. Do this and you will have life forever.”


“‘But those children turned against me. They did not obey my laws. They did not keep my commands. They did not do the things I told them. \{And those are good laws.\} If a person obeys them, then he will live. They treated my special days of rest like they were not important. So I decided to destroy them completely in the desert, to let them feel the full force of my anger.


“‘But the family of Israel turned against me in the desert. They did not follow my laws. They refused to obey my rules. \{And they are good rules\}—if a person obeys those rules, then he will live. They treated my special days of rest as if they were not important. They worked on those days many, many times. I decided to destroy them in the desert—to let them feel the full force of my anger.


So tell the people of Israel that I say to them, ‘I am the Lord. I will save you. I will make you free. You will not be slaves of the Egyptians. I will use my great power and bring terrible punishment to the Egyptians. Then I will save you.


“I am the Lord, and I don’t change. You are Jacob’s children, and you have not been completely destroyed.


He said, “I am the Lord. Tell the king of Egypt everything that I tell you.”


Jesus answered, “Why do you ask me about what is good? Only God is good. But if you want to have life forever, obey the commands.”


And I died \{spiritually\} because of sin. The command was meant to bring life, but for me that command brought death.


“You must never have sexual relations with [312] your close relatives! I am the Lord.


“Now, Israel, listen to the laws and to the commands that I teach you. Obey them and you will live. Then you can go in and take the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.


You warned them.\par You told them to come back.\par But they were too proud.\par They refused to listen to your commands.\par If people obey your laws,\par then they will truly live!\par But our ancestors {\cf2\super [57]} broke your laws.\par They were stubborn.\par They turned their backs on you.\par They refused to listen.\par


Listen closely to the things I say.\par Listen to me so your souls will live.\par Come to me and I will make an agreement\par with you that will continue forever.\par It will be like the agreement\par that I made with David.\par I promised David that I would love him\par and be loyal to him forever.\par And you can trust that agreement.\par


He obeys my laws. He thinks about my decisions and learns to be fair and dependable. He is a good person, so he will live.


The Lord your God will make you and your descendants want to obey him. [198] Then you will love the Lord with all your heart. And you will live!


You must love the Lord your God and obey him. Never leave him! Why? Because the Lord is your life. And the Lord will give you a long life in the land that he promised to give to your ancestors [200] —Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
