Jeremiah 35:6 - Easy To Read Version

6 But the Recabite people answered, “We never drink wine. We never drink it because our ancestor {\cf2\super [294]} Jonadab son of Recab, gave us this command: ‘You and your descendants {\cf2\super [295]} must never drink wine.

John will be a great man for the Lord (God). He will never drink wine or liquor. Even at the time when John is being born, he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. {\cf2\super [6]}


and the families of scribes [28] that lived at Jabez, Tirath, Shimeath, and Sucah. These scribes are the Kenite people that came from Hammath. Hammath was the founder [29] of Beth Recab.


After Jehu left there, he met Jehonadab son of Recab. Jehonadab was on his way to meet Jehu. Jehu greeted Jehonadab and said to him, “Are you a faithful friend to me, as I am to you? [123] ”


She must not eat anything that grows on a grapevine. She must not drink any wine or strong drink. She must not eat any food that is unclean. [105] She must do everything that I have commanded her to do.”


But he said to me, ‘You are pregnant and will have a son. Don’t drink any wine or other strong drink. Don’t eat any food that is unclean. [104] Why? Because the boy will be dedicated to God in a special way. The boy will be God’s special person from before he is born until the day he dies.’”


“You and your sons must not drink wine or beer when you come into the Meeting Tent. {If you drink those things,} then you will die! This law continues forever through your generations.


Dear friends, you are like visitors and strangers \{in this world\}. So I beg you to stay away from the evil things your bodies want to do. These things fight against your soul.


We have lived in tents and have obeyed everything our ancestor Jonadab commanded us.


God made that promise\par when Abraham’s family was small.\par They were only strangers spending time there.\par


There were only a few people.\par A few strangers in a foreign land.\par


Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Recab went into the temple [127] of Baal. Jehu said to the worshipers of Baal, “Look around and be sure that there are no servants of the Lord with you. Be sure there are only people that worship Baal.”


“You must honor (respect) your father and your mother. Do this so you will have a full life in the land that the Lord your God gives you.


The boys grew up. Esau became a skilled hunter. He loved to be out in the fields. But Jacob was a quiet man. He stayed in his tent.


“Jonadab son of Recab ordered his sons not to drink wine, and that command has been obeyed. Until today, the descendants {\cf2\super [296]} of Jonadab obeyed their ancestor’s {\cf2\super [297]} command. They don’t drink wine. But I am the Lord. And I have given you people of Judah messages again and again, but you didn’t obey me.
