23 King, you live high on the mountain\par in your house made from cedar wood.\par It is almost like you live in Lebanon\par where that wood came from.\par \{You think you are safe,\par high on the mountain in your big house.\}\par But you will really groan\par when your punishment comes.\par You will hurt like a woman\par giving birth to a baby.”\par

We have heard the news about that army.\par We are helpless from fear.\par We feel trapped by our troubles.\par We are like a woman that is having a baby.\par


This is what the Lord says about the palace where the king of Judah lives:


Yes, it will be very bad for the person that becomes rich by doing wrong. That person does those things to live in a safe place. He thinks that he can stop other people from stealing from him. \{But bad things will happen to him.\}


“Edom, {\cf2\super [3]} I will make you the smallest nation.\par Everyone will hate you very much.\par


They never call to me from their hearts.\par Yes, they cry on their beds.\par And they cut themselves\par when they ask for grain and\par new wine.\par But \{in their hearts,\} they have turned away\par from me.\par


I will go back to my place,\par until the people admit they are guilty,\par until they come looking for me.\par Yes, in their trouble they will try hard\par to find me.”\par


Edom, you scared other nations.\par So you thought you were important.\par But your pride has fooled you.\par You live in those caves, high on the cliff.\par Your home is high in the hills.\par But even if you build your home\par as high as an eagle’s nest,\par I will bring you down from there.”\par The Lord said these things.\par


People in Moab, leave your towns.\par Go live among the rocks;\par be like a dove that makes its nest\par at the opening of a cave.”\par


“Jerusalem, I am against you.\par You sit on top of the mountain.\par You sit like a queen over this valley.\par You people of Jerusalem say,\par ‘No person can attack us.\par No person can come into our strong city.’\par But listen to this message from the Lord.\par


You can hear crying on the bare hills.\par The people of Israel are crying\par and praying for mercy.\par They became very evil.\par They forgot the Lord their God.\par
