“But Jeshurun [212] became fat and kicked {like a bull}. (Yes, you people were fed well! You became full and fat!) Then he left the God who made him! He ran away from the Rock who saved him.


\{You think\} you have everything you need. \{You think\} you are rich. \{You think\} you have become kings without us. I wish you really were kings! Then we could be kings together with you.


The voice of the Lord shouts to the city.\par A wise person honors the Lord’s name. {\cf2\super [74]} \par So pay attention to the punishing rod.\par and to the One who holds that rod! {\cf2\super [75]} \par


The message of Amos. Amos was one of the shepherds from the city Tekoa. Amos saw visions {\cf2\super [1]} about Israel during the time that Uzziah was king of Judah and during the time that Jeroboam son of Joash was king of Israel. This was two years before the earthquake.


\{I gave food to the Israelites.\} They ate that food. They became full and satisfied. They became proud. And they forgot me!


I did not speak in secret.\par I have spoken freely.\par I did not hide my words\par in a dark place of the world.\par I did not tell the people of Jacob\par to look for me in empty places.\par I am the Lord, and I speak the truth.\par I say things that are true.”\par


If I have more than I need, then I will think I don’t need you. But if I am poor then I might steal. Then I will bring shame to the name of God.


Those people say,\par “We will say the right lies\par and become very important.\par We know what to say,\par so that no one will be our master.”\par


Bad people are too proud to follow God.\par They make all their evil plans.\par And they act like there is no God.\par


Azariah the high priest from Zadok’s family said to Hezekiah, “From the time that the people started bringing the offerings into the Lord’s house, we have had plenty to eat. We have eaten until we are full and there is still plenty left over! The Lord has really blessed his people. That is why we have so much left over.”


I will take them into the land that I promised to give to their ancestors [206] —a land filled with many good things. [207] And they will have all they want to eat. They will have a rich life. But then they will turn to other gods and serve them. They will turn away from me and break my Agreement.


“Judah, a long time ago you threw off\par your yoke.\par You broke the ropes\par \{that I used to control you\}.\par You said to me,\par ‘I will not serve you!’\par You were like a prostitute\par on every high hill\par and under every green tree. {\cf2\super [11]} \par


Judah, stop chasing after idols!\par Stop being thirsty for those other gods.\par But you say, ‘It is no use! I can’t quit!\par I love those other gods.\par I want to worship them.’\par


You left the Rock (God) who made you; you forgot the God who gave you life.


But Pharaoh answered, “I have given you everything you need here! Why do you want to go back to your own country?”


But evil people say to God,\par ‘Leave us alone!\par We don’t care what you want us to do!’\par


So I will go to the leaders of Judah.\par I will talk to them.\par Surely the leaders know the way of the Lord.\par I am sure they know the law of their God.”\par But the leaders had all joined together\par to break away from serving the Lord.\par


They turned against God,\par so a lion from the forest will attack them.\par A wolf from the desert will kill them.\par A leopard is hiding near their cities.\par The leopard will tear to pieces\par any person that comes out of the city.\par This will happen because the people\par of Judah have sinned again and again.\par They have wandered away from the Lord\par many times.\par


Why? Because I want to touch their heart. I want to show them I love them, even though they left me for their filthy idols.’
