That is what God will do to evil people.\par That is what God plans to give them.”\par


Then the master will punish that servant. The master will send him away to be with the hypocrites. {\cf2\super [382]} And in that place people will cry and grind their teeth \{with pain\}.


A young woman doesn’t forget her jewelry.\par A bride doesn’t forget the sash for her dress.\par But my people have forgotten me\par too many times to count.\par


He will make hot coals and burning\par sulphur fall like rain on those bad people.\par Those bad people will get nothing but\par a hot, burning wind. {\cf2\super [63]} \par


People who forget God are bad.\par They will go to the place of death.\par


The judges in Jerusalem accept bribes\par to help them decide who wins in court.\par The priests in Jerusalem must be paid\par before they will teach the people.\par People must pay the prophets\par before they will look into the future.\par And then those leaders expect the Lord\par to help them. They say,\par “The Lord lives here with us.\par So nothing bad will happen to us.”\par


People are so stupid!\par Metal workers are fooled by the idols\par that they themselves made.\par Those statues are nothing but lies.\par They are stupid. {\cf2\super [82]} \par


“My people have done two evil things.\par They turned away from me\par (I am the spring of living water),\par and they dug their own water cisterns.\par (They turned to other gods.)\par But their cisterns are broken.\par Those cisterns can’t hold water.\par


You people say, “We have made an agreement with death. We have a contract with Sheol—\{the place of death\}. So we will not be punished. Punishment will pass us without hurting us. We will hide behind our tricks and lies.”


At that time, Jacob’s (Israel’s) wealth\par will all be gone.\par Jacob will be like a man who was sick\par and became weak and thin.\par


Those people traded the truth of God for a lie. Those people worshiped and served things that were made. But people did not worship and serve the God who made those things. God should be praised forever. Amen.


God decided what he should do with them. Then God chose a place for them. God drew a line and showed them their land. So the animals will own that land forever. They will live there year after year.


“Your sins and your fathers’ sins are all the same.” The Lord said this, “Your fathers did these sins when they burned incense {\cf2\super [469]} in the mountains. They shamed me on those hills. And I punished them first. I gave them the punishment they should have.”


You can hear crying on the bare hills.\par The people of Israel are crying\par and praying for mercy.\par They became very evil.\par They forgot the Lord their God.\par


Your people didn’t listen to me! They didn’t accept my teachings. Jerusalem didn’t trust the Lord. Jerusalem didn’t go to her God.


But my people have forgotten about me.\par They make offerings to worthless idols.\par My people stumble in the things they do.\par They stumble about in the old paths\par of their ancestors. {\cf2\super [153]} \par My people would rather walk\par along back roads and poor highways,\par than to follow me on the good roads.\par


“So, the Lord my Master said these things, ‘\{Jerusalem,\} you forgot me. You threw me away and left me behind. So now you must suffer for leaving me and living like a prostitute. {\cf2\super [190]} You must suffer for your wicked dreams.’”
