Sharpen the arrows!\par Get your shields!\par The Lord stirred up the kings\par of the Medes. {\cf2\super [418]} \par He has stirred them up\par because he wants to destroy Babylon.\par The Lord will give the people of Babylon\par the punishment that they deserve.\par The army from Babylon destroyed\par the Lord’s temple {\cf2\super [419]} in Jerusalem.\par So the Lord will give them\par the punishment they should have.\par
During the first year {\cf2\super [1]} that Cyrus was king of Persia, the Lord encouraged Cyrus to make an announcement. Cyrus put that announcement in writing and had it read every place in his kingdom. This happened so that the Lord’s message that was spoken through Jeremiah {\cf2\super [2]} would truly happen. This is the announcement:
\{Tell me the answers to these questions:\}\par Who woke the man \{that is coming\}\par from the east?\par Goodness walks with him.\par He uses his sword \{and defeats nations\}—\par they become like dust.\par He uses his bow and conquers kings—\par they run away like straw blown\par by the wind.\par
Then say to those men of Judah that are watching you: ‘This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: I will send for Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, to come here. He is my servant. And I will set his throne over these stones I have buried here. Nebuchadnezzar will spread his canopy {\cf2\super [350]} above these stones.
The Lord All-Powerful says:\par “Babylon’s thick, strong wall\par will be pulled down.\par Her high gates will be burned.\par The people of Babylon will work hard,\par but it will not help.\par They will become very tired\par trying to save the city.\par But they will only become fuel\par for the flames.”\par
