9 At that time, all the fort cities will be empty. Those cities will be like the mountains and the forests {\cf2\super [180]} in the land before the people of Israel came. \{In the past,\} all the people ran away because the people of Israel were coming. \{In the future,\} the country will be empty again.

At that time, the great city will be empty—it will be like a desert. All the people will be gone—they will run away. That city will be like an open pasture. Young cattle will eat grass there. The cattle will eat leaves from the branches of the vines.


The land was ruined by the people\par that lived there and by what they did.\par


Why? Because you obey the laws of Omri. {\cf2\super [78]} \par You do all the \{bad\} things\par that Ahab’s family does.\par You follow their teachings.\par So I will let you be destroyed.\par People will whistle in amazement\par when they see your destroyed city.\par Then you will bear the shame\par that the other nations bring to you. {\cf2\super [79]} \par


I will destroy the cities in your country.\par I will pull down all your fortresses. {\cf2\super [69]} \par


Isaac’s high places {\cf2\super [89]} will be destroyed. Israel’s holy places will be made into a pile of rocks. I will attack and kill Jeroboam’s {\cf2\super [90]} family with swords.”


So your armies will hear the noise of battle. And all your fortresses {\cf2\super [112]} will be destroyed. It will be like the time Shalman {\cf2\super [113]} destroyed Beth Arbel. At that time of war, mothers were killed with their children.


The people will not trust the great things they have made. They will not go to the special gardens {\cf2\super [178]} and altars {\cf2\super [179]} \{they made for false gods\}.


This will happen because you have forgotten the God who saves you. You have not remembered that God is your place of safety.
