But even if the Israelites do raise their children, \{it will not help\}. I will take the children away from them. I will leave them, and they will have nothing but troubles.


Ephraim surrounded me with false gods.\par The people of Israel turned against me. {\cf2\super [124]} \{And they were destroyed!\}\par But Judah still walks with El. {\cf2\super [125]} \par Judah is true to the holy ones. {\cf2\super [126]} ”\par


If we say that we have not sinned, then we are saying that God is a liar—we don’t accept God’s true teaching.


“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets. {\cf2\super [361]} You kill with rocks those men that God sent to you. Many, many times I wanted to help your people. I wanted to gather your people together like a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you did not let me.


\{I will tell you the things I did!\}\par I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to you.\par I brought you from the land of Egypt.\par I freed you from slavery.\par


Jonah told the men he was running away from the Lord. The men became very scared when they learned this. The men asked Jonah, “What terrible thing did you do against your God?”


\{Jonah did not want to obey God,\} so Jonah tried to run away from the Lord. Jonah went to Joppa. {\cf2\super [3]} Jonah found a boat that was going to the faraway city of Tarshish. {\cf2\super [4]} Jonah paid money for the trip and went on the boat. Jonah wanted to travel with the people on this boat to Tarshish and run away from the Lord.


But the more I {\cf2\super [114]} called the Israelites,\par the more the Israelites left me.\par The Israelites gave sacrifices to the Baals. {\cf2\super [115]} \par They burned incense {\cf2\super [116]} to the idols. {\cf2\super [117]} \par


Those people will not listen to my God.\par So he will refuse to listen to them.\par And they will wander among the nations\par without a home.\par


Their evil makes their king happy.\par Their false gods please their leaders.\par


“I will heal Israel!\par Then people will know\par that Ephraim {\cf2\super [69]} sinned.\par People will know about Samaria’s {\cf2\super [70]} lies.\par People will know about the thieves\par that come and go in that town.\par


My flock wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My flock was scattered over all the face of the earth. There was no one to search or to look for them.’”


\{God said,\} “You people might say, ‘\{God\} my Master isn’t fair!’ But listen, family of Israel. I am fair. You are the ones who are not fair!


“You people keep repeating this proverb. Why? You say:


“After all those bad things, … Oh Jerusalem, it will be very bad for you!” The Lord my Master said all these things.


The crown has fallen from our head.\par Things have gone bad for us\par because we sinned.\par


This is what the Lord says about the people of Judah: “The people of Judah really love to leave me. Those people don’t stop themselves from leaving me. So now, the Lord will not accept them. Now the Lord will remember the bad things they do. The Lord will punish them for their sins.”


The Lord said,\par “These are my people.\par These are my real children.”\par So the Lord saved those people.\par


We sinned and turned against the Lord.\par We turned away from him and left him.\par We planned evil things.\par We planned things that are against God.\par We have thought of these things\par and planned them in our hearts.\par


Jacob, the Lord made you! Israel, the Lord made you! And now the Lord says, “Don’t be afraid! I saved you. I named you. You are mine.


Precious Judah, don’t be afraid!\par My dear {\cf2\super [377]} people of Israel, don’t be scared!\par I really will help you.”\par


Look at the people going down to Egypt for help. The people ask for horses. They think horses will save them. The people hope the chariots {\cf2\super [289]} and horse soldiers from Egypt will protect them. The people think they are safe because that army is very big. The people don’t trust the Holy One of Israel (God). The people don’t ask the Lord for help.


God saved our ancestors from their enemies!\par God rescued them from their enemies.\par


Those people told God,\par ‘Leave us alone!\par God All-Powerful can’t do anything to us!’\par


The people of Israel are your servants and your people. You used your great power and rescued those people.


Remember, you were slaves in Egypt. And the Lord your God set you free. So that is why I am giving you this command today.


I will throw you away from me just like I threw away all your brothers from Ephraim. {\cf2\super [61]}


We tried to heal Babylon,\par but she can’t be healed.\par So let us leave her,\par and let each of us\par go to our own country.\par God in heaven will decide\par Babylon’s punishment.\par He will decide what will happen to Babylon.\par


Rich people in that city are still cruel!\par The people in that city still tell lies.\par Yes, those people tell their lies!\par


The Lord said, “Look at these children. They don’t obey me. They make plans, but they don’t ask me to help them. They make agreements with other nations, but my Spirit does not want those agreements. These people are adding more and more sins to themselves.


These children are going down to Egypt for help, but they did not ask me if that was the right thing to do. They hope they will be saved by the Pharaoh. {\cf2\super [272]} They want Egypt to protect them.


They have not been faithful to the Lord. Their children are from some stranger. And now, he will destroy them and their land again.” {\cf2\super [56]}
